Some 200 stujdents from Wajir County will join the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) for higher learning after winning the sponsorship of the local Women Representative Fatuma Gedi. The MP announced the programme during the disbursement of Sh5.8 million cheques to the beneficiaries.
The MP, who hosted a high-powered fundrising for Madarasatul Al-Fatah (waqaf) led by ODM party leader Raila Odinga and Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho at Township Primary School, promised to help the beneficiaries to acquire important skills that they will depend on for their sustenance.
Besides Raila and Joho, the funds drive was also tended by Senators Mohammed Faki, Cleopas Malala and Abdullahi Kabreta representing Mombasa, Kakamega and Wajir respectively, Wajir Deputy Governor Ahmed Werar, MPs Ahmed Abdisalan (Wajir North), Junet Mohamed (Suna East), Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) and Asha Mohamed (Mombasa Women Rep), former Wajir East MP Abass Sheikh, and several local leaders.
During the funds drive, the MP emphasised the need for Muslim leaders to contribute to charity, which she said was the only virtue that helped one in their life even after they died. “I organised this funds drive in order that our daughters and sons in the near future can have better Islamic grounding,” she said.
The Sh5.8 million programme is supported by the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) which is a fund managed by Women Representatives. It was part of a comprehensive plan by Fatuma Gedi that has seen her launch scholarship funds targeting girls in secondary schools and entrepreneurship funds for women and disabled people.
Raila and Joho praised the MP’s efforts, stating that she was one of the most effective women representatives whose impact was being felt beyond Wajir County. They promised to support the MP's other initiatives in the near future.
